Select ABOUT LLNL XFTP in the FILE menu for version and authorinformation.Use the CONNECT menu to connect the two sides to the desiredcombination of local and/or remote hosts. (Depending on howthe user preferences are set, when LLNL XFTP comes up somecombination of the left and right sides might already beconnected to the local host.) Once connected, traverse through a host's directory structureby (1) using the "directory name" menu (the menu just abovethe directory list), (2) double-clicking on entries in thedirectory list, (3) selecting the CHANGE DIRECTORY itemin the host's DIR menu, or (4) selecting an item from theGO TO PREVIOUS DIRECTORY submenu in the host's DIR menu. Obtain different types of views into a host's current directoryby selecting the DISPLAY DIRECTORY (LONG) or DISPLAY DIRECTORY(TABLE) items in the host's DIR menu. Select/deselect directory entries to operate on by (1)single-clicking on entries in the main directory list,(2) single-clicking on entries in the tabular directorylist, or (3) dragging the mouse with the left button held downover entries in the tabular directory list, or (4) by selectingany of the items in the host's SELECT menu. Transfer selected items by clicking on the COPY or RCOPY(recursive copy) buttons. Be sure to first set the filetransfer mode by toggling the appropriate button (ASCII orBINARY) in the main window. Perform other types of operations on selected items byselecting any one of the items in the host's OPS menu. Configure LLNL XFTP by selecting the PREFERENCES item in theOPTIONS menu.LLNL XFTP is a graphical user interface to FTP (File TransferProtocol). LLNL XFTP does not execute the FTP program; instead,it directly communicates with remote FTP servers. LLNL XFTP is an X client and follows the OSF/Motiflook-and-feel. LLNL XFTP enables users to transfer files andperform various directory manipulation commands, bothremotely and locally. Two especially notable featuresare the ability to (1) perform "third-party" filetransfers, and (2) transfer or delete entire directorysubstructures. LLNL XFTP's main window is divided into five main sections: (1)the main menu bar at the top of the window, (2) the diagnosticslog at the bottom, (3) the file transfer controls in thecenter, and (4 and 5) the "left" and "right" host sectionsto either side of the file transfer controls. LLNL XFTP can be connected to zero, one, or two hosts. The hostsmay be any combination of local and remote hosts (the localhost is the client host upon which LLNL XFTP is running). Each host section consists of four major graphical elements:(1) a label which displays the host's name; (2) a menu barwhose menus contain many commands that operate on the host;(3) a "directory" menu; and (4) a scrollable "directorylist." Each host's CONNECT menu contains commands forconnecting/disconnecting local and remote hosts. Each host's DIR menu contains various commands for creatingnew directories, and for changing and displaying thecurrent directory. Each host's SELECT menu contains commands forselecting/deselecting entries in the current directory(the selections appear in the scrollable list of directoryentries). Each host's OPS menu contains several commands that operateon selected directory entries. Each host's directory menu contains each link of the pathof the current directory (the last link is displayed). Byselecting a link in the path, the current directory iscorrespondingly changed. (Hence, this is a mechanism totraverse up the host's directory structure.) Each host's directory list contains the entries of thecurrent directory. One way to select/deselect a directoryentry is to click on it. If an entry is double-clicked,an attempt is made to change the current directory to thatentry. (Hence, this is a way to traverse down the host'sdirectory structure.) The file transfer controls in the middle of the main window allowyou to initiate file transfers on selected entries. Thetransfers can go from left to right or from right to left. Angle brackets in the COPY and RCOPY buttons indicate thedirection of the transfer (e.g., ">>Copy>>" indicatesthat a left-to-right transfer would take place). TheVIEW button displays the selected file. The scrollable diagnostics log window at the bottom of the mainwindow displays error and status information. There are ways to save and clear the contents of thediagnostics window, and tocontrol the level of verbosity of messages written to it. There is a flag to the left of the diagnostics log windowthat indicates whether an operation completes successfullyor not. If an operation fails then (1) a beep is emitted,(2) the flag changes from green to red (white to black onmonochrome displays), (3) the "OK" inthe flag changes to "E", and (4) and error message iswritten to the diagnostics log window. The next operationwill automatically clear the error flag. LLNL XFTP automatically caches (1) wildcard expressions, (2) pathsof current directories, (3) host names and user names usedin connecting to remote hosts, and (4) quoted commands. Thepurpose of each cache is to reduce the amount of typingrequired. The cache is automatically preserved across LLNL XFTPsessions in a file named ".xftpcache" in your home directory. Finally, selecting item PREFERENCES in the OPTIONS menu popsup a dialog that allows you to configure LLNL XFTP according toyour preferences. The FILE menu contains the following items: ABOUT LLNL XFTP Displays information about this version of XFTP. QUIT Terminates the application. The LOG menu contains the following items: CLEAR LOG Clears the diagnostics log window. SAVE LOG Writes the contents of the diagnostics window to a user-specifiedfile. The existing contents of the diagnostics window are notremoved. The OPTIONS menu contains the following items: PREFERENCES Displays the user preferences dialog. VIEWER PREFERENCES Displays the viewer preferences dialog. SAVE PREFERENCES Saves the current settings of the user and viewerpreferences. The CONNECT menu contains the following commands forconnecting/disconnect local and remote hosts: CONNECT TO LOCAL Connects to the local (client) host. If currently connected, theconnection is first closed. CONNECT TO REMOTE Displays a dialog that enables the user to connect to a remote host. CONNECT TO ANONYMOUS Displays a dialog that enables the user to easily connect to ananonymous FTP site. DISCONNECT Closes the currently connected host. The DIR menu contains the following commands for creating newdirectories, and for changing and displaying the currentdirectory: GO TO PREVIOUS DIRECTORY Displays a pullright menu that allows the user to easily changethe current directory to a previously referenced directory. CHANGE DIRECTORY Displays a dialog that enables the user to change the currentdirectory. MAKE DIRECTORY Displays a dialog to prompt for the name of a directory to makein the current directory. DISPLAY DIRECTORY PATH Pops up a dialog that displays the current directory for thathost. It will be automatically updated as the current directorychanges. DISPLAY DIRECTORY (LONG) Pops up a dialog that displays the contents of the currentdirectory in a scrolled list. If supported by the host (andthis is almost always the case), additional information abouteach directory entry is displayed, such as file length andaccess restrictions. This display is automatically updatedas the current directory changes. This directory display doesnot support selecting entries or displaying the currentselection. WARNING: Using this feature can increase network traffic, put anadditional load on the remote host, and slow down interactivity. DISPLAY DIRECTORY (TABLE) Pops up a dialog that displays the contents of the currentdirectory in tabular form. This dialog may be used to viewand modify the directory's selected entries. Entries may beselected/deselected either by clicking or by moving the cursorover the entries with the mouse button down. Moving the mousetoo quickly can cause some of the entries to be skipped. If anentry is double-clicked, an attempt is made to change thecurrent directory to that entry. This display is automaticallyupdated as the current directory changes. The SELECT menu contains the following commands forselecting/deselecting entries in the current directory: SELECT ALL ENTRIES Selects all the entries in the host's current directory. DESELECT ALL ENTRIES Deselects all the entries in the host's current directory. USE WILDCARD Pops up a dialog to prompt for a wildcard expression to usein selecting entries in the host's current directory list. The OPS menu contains the following commands that operateon selected directory entries: DELETE SELECTED ENTRY(S) Deletes the selected entries. A dialog pops up to enable theuser to monitor the progress of the deletions. The dialogcontains a button for aborting the deletions. MOVE SELECTED ENTRY(S) Moves selected entries from the current directory to anotherdirectory on the same host. This is similar to the UNIX "mv"command, but without rename capability. (Use RENAME SELECTEDENTRY(S) to rename entries.) RENAME SELECTED ENTRY(S) Pops up a dialog to individually rename selected entries. This is similar to the UNIX "mv" command except that therenamed entries cannot be moved into another directory. (Use MOVE SELECTED ENTRY(S) to move entries.) SEND QUOTED COMMAND Pops up a dialog to prompt for a "raw" command to send tothe FTP server of the remote host. RECURSIVELY DELETE SELECTED ENTRY(S) Recursively deletes the selected entries. A dialog pops upto enable the user to monitor the progress of the deletions. WARNING: Exercise extreme caution when using this commandbecause it deletes entire directory subtrees. To minimizethe chance of an unintentional deletion, this menu itemis always greyed out unless the user preference RECURSIVE DELETEENABLED is turned on.The directory name menu contains each link of the path of thecurrent directory (the last link is displayed). By selectinga link in the path, the current directory is correspondinglychanged. Hence, this is a mechanism for traversing up thehost's directory structure. The directory list displays the entries of the currentdirectory. One way to select/deselect a directory entryis to click on it. If an entry is double-clicked, anattempt is made to change the current directory to thatentry. Hence, this is a mechanism for traversing down thehost's directory structure. If connected, this label displays the name of the host;otherwise "Not Connected" is displayed.Transfers the selected files according to the mode (ASCIIor Binary) specified in "Xfer Mode". A dialog pops up toenable the user to monitor the progress of the transfers. The dialog contains a button for aborting the transfers.Recursively transfers the selected entries according tothe mode (ASCII or Binary) specified in "Xfer Mode". Ifa selected entry is a directory, an attempt is made totransfer its entire directory subtree. A dialog pops up toenable the user to monitor the progress of the transfers. The dialog contains a button for aborting the transfers.Displays the selected file. The "Viewer Preferences"dialog (accessible via the OPTIONS menu) can be used tocontrol whether the file will be displayed using the built-inviewer or using an external viewer of the user's choice(e.g., emacs or xv). The selection of the viewer isconfigurable, based on the file extension (e.g., ".gif"or ".jpg"). There is no limit on the number or typesof viewers that can be simultaneously displayed. The file is transferred according to the mode (ASCII orBinary) specified in "Xfer Mode". A dialog pops upto enable the user to monitor the progress of thetransfer. The dialog contains a button for abortingthe transfer. The destination of the transfer is a temporary directorycreated in the directory defined as P_tmpdir in the includefile stdio.h. If the environment variable TMPDIR isdefined, it is used as the directory. The temporarydirectory, and the files it contains, are automaticallydeleted when the user dismisses the viewer or terminatesLLNL XFTP. If the file is recognized as being compressed, it isexpanded before viewing. LLNL XFTP excutes the followingdecompressors based on the file extension: gunzip for".z" and ".gz"; uncompress for ".Z"; atob for"atob"; and uudecode for ".uu". LLNL XFTP searchesfor the decompressor application in the standard wayusing the PATH environment variable.Click on a toggle button to select the desired file transfermode (ASCII or Binary). The default file transfer mode canbe set via the user preference INITIAL TRANSFER MODE.The status flag indicates whether an operation completessuccessfully or not. If an operation fails then (1) a beepis emitted, (2) the flag changes from green to red(white to black on monochrome displays), (3) the"OK" in the flag changes to "E", and (4) an errormessage is written to the diagnostics log window. Thenext operation will automatically clear the error flag. The diagnostics window displays error messages and statusinformation. The user can control the level of verbosityof messages via the user preferenceDIAGNOSTICS. The contents of this window can be saved toa file by selecting the SAVE LOG item in theLOG menu. If NO, then the most recently used items are placed at the topof the list.Specifies whether to attempt to sort the "long" directorylists by time modified (with most recent listed first)instead of by name. The YES option is considered to beunsafe because some FTP servers do not support this optionand may give unpredictable results. (Most UNIX hostssupport this option.)Specifies whether existing sink files are to be renamed beforefile transfer occurs. If YES, then the existing sink fileis typically renamed by appending a "." If YES(UNSAFE)is choosen, "/" is appended to directories, "*" isappended to executables, "@" is appended to symbolic linksand "=" is appended to AF_UNIX address family sockets. The YES option is considered to be unsafe because some FTPservers do not support this option and may give unpredictableresults. (Most UNIX hosts support this option.) This option is ignored when used with VMS hosts (and, hence,is safe to use with VMS.) Furthermore, if you are referencing a directory or directoryentry whose name ends with one of these special symbols, you will need to use the NO option. When indoubt, select NO(SAFE).
