Top 12 Silentwriter SuperScript 610 Questions and Answers from NEC Technologies' Technical Support Center November 1993 Q1. I have a new NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 printer. When I send something to print, the SScript 610 goes through it's normal print routine, but the output appears to be wrapping around on the page. What causes this to happen? A This will normally happen if the parallel cable in use is either longer than the recommended 10 foot maximum length, or if the cable is not of a high quality grade. Q2. Will the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 work on a Novell Network? A The NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 was not designed to be used in any network environment. It was designed to be used as a personal, non shared printing device. Q3. Can I connect the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 to multiple PC systems through a mechanical or electronic switching device? A NEC does not recommend connecting the Silentwriter SuperScript 610 to any type of print sharing device. The reason why, is that the parallel port on the SScript 610 is a high speed bi-directional port which must be driven in real time, and it is also very sensitive to noise and static electricity. Q4. What paper sizes does the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 printer support? A The NEC Silentwriter SuperScript printer supports the following paper sizes. NEC SuperScript 610 PCL MODE: Letter (8.5 x 11 in.) Legal (8.5 x 14 in.) Executive (7.25 x 10.5 in.) A4 (210 x 297 mm) Envelope #10 (4 1/8 x 9 1/2 in.) Envelope DL (110 x 220 mm) Envelope C5 (162 x 229 mm) Envelope Monarch (3.875 x 7.5 in.) NEC SuperScript 610 GDI MODE: Letter (8.5 x 11 in.) Legal (8.5 x 14 in.) Executive (7.25 x 10.5 in.) A4 (210 x 297 mm) A5 (148 x 210 mm) B5 (182 x 257 mm) Envelope #10 (4 1/8 x 9 1/2 in.) Envelope DL (110 x 220 mm) Envelope C5 (162 x 229 mm) Envelope Monarch (3.875 x 7.5 in.) Q5. How can I get the extended PC-8 line draw characters to print from a DOS based application when printing to the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 printer? A You will need to embed an escape sequence at the beginning of the file which is being sent to the printer in order for it to select the PC-8 Symbol Set. The escape sequence which you will need to issue to the printer is ESC(10U . This command must be entered into the software in use according to the parameters set forth by the software vendor. Q6. Can third party EP-Cartridges be used in the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610? A No. The EP Cartridge that is used in the SScript 610 is proprietary to NEC Technologies, Inc. Q7. Can additional memory be added to the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610? A No. The SScript 610 does not accept optional memory because it was designed to be a host-based printer. What this means, is that the printer relies on the memory of your computer system. The more memory installed in your computer the faster the printer will process and output print jobs. Q8. Since installing the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 printer into my MS Windows environment, the overall response time of my Windows based applications have slowed down once a job is sent to the printer for processing. Is this normal, or has the SScript 610 software been installed incorrectly? A The NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 has its own PRINT MANAGER. This PRINT MANAGER allows you to set the priority level for the printer to access the memory of your computer system. These priority levels can be set through the OPTIONS selection under the SScript PRINT MANAGER. If the priority level is set to HIGH, then the printer will take maximum control over your computer's memory, which will allow the printer to produce faster output. If set to MEDIUM, then the printer has less control over the system's memory and the output will take a little longer. If set to LOW, then the printer has the least amount of control over your system's memory, which will result in the printer to take an even longer time to produce output. Q9. I no longer need to have the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 software installed on my system. What procedures will I need to perform in order to remove it entirely from my system? A During the initial installation of the SScript 610 software a de-install program was copied the the SScript directory on the hard disk. To perform the removal of all SScript 610 software files you will need to perform the following: 1. Launch MS Windows. 2. Choose the RUN option under the FILE selection inside your Windows. 3. Type C:\SSCRIPT\NECDELET in the command line box and click OK. At this point, all files associated with the SScript 610 software will be deleted from your computer system. If you experience any difficulty performing this procedure please feel free to contact our Printer Technical Support line at 1-800-388-8888 between the hours of 8:30am and 8:00pm EST Monday through Friday. Q10. Can the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 printer accept downloaded soft fonts? A The printer will only accept downloaded soft fonts when it is running in the NEC Silentwriter 610 PCL MODE. Q11. When would I want to use the NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 in the PCL Mode rather than the GDI Mode? A You would want to print under PCL Mode if one of the following criteria need to be met. 1. To operate the printer under non-Windows based applications. 2. To print previously saved PCL-formatted files. 3. To have the ability to print text or ASCII formatted files directly (DOS Print Screens). 4. To have the ability to print extremely complex graphic files which may not be displayed well under some Windows based applications. Q12. When printing under GDI Mode, the fonts MS Serif and MS Sans appear to be jagged. What can be done to correct this jagged appearance? A These two fonts, MS Serif and MS Sans appear to be jagged when running the SScript 610 under GDI Mode due to the fact that GDI takes a WYSIWYP approach, which means, what you see is what you print, and because these fonts are fixed at a specific resolution, they will have a jagged appearance on the output. The only way to correct this is to swap these two fonts with others, or change to PCL Mode and these two fonts will be substituted automatically.
